There is no reciprocal agreement with the UK for healthcare needs as the Channel Islands are outside of EU jurisdiction, so travel insurance is a good idea. We suggest you organise this when booking your trip.

What happens if I get ill while on Alderney?

There are doctors and a good hospital with excellent facilities available on the island. The island is not part of the NHS so treatment needs to be paid personally or with health insurance. If the problem is more serious patients are transferred to Guernsey or Southampton free of charge.

How far is the hotel from the airport?

The hotel is an eight minute taxi ride from the airport. There are sometimes taxis waiting outside the arrival area however it is probably best to request a taxi is booked for your arrival. This can be done in the booking process. For anyone with no luggage and feeling energetic, it is about a twenty five minute walk – downhill rather than uphill, thankfully.

How far is the town centre from Braye Beach Hotel?

St Anne – the town – is a 10 minute walk from the hotel. It’s an uphill walk so if walking is difficult it may be better to get a taxi. Taxis can be organised at the hotel reception.

What shops and amenities are available on Alderney?

Alderney has a continental feel, with shops closing at lunchtimes as well as a half day on Wednesday and all of Sunday. There are a variety of shops selling clothes, books, shoes and gifts – however you will not find an abundance of shops like the bigger islands of Guernsey and Jersey. Shopping on Alderney is VAT free. Most shops have credit/debit card facilities although some of the smaller places may well not and so having cash is advisable. There are banks, a post office and a pharmacy.

What is the best time of year to see the wild flowers?

May and June are the best months to see the island in flower. Every June Alderney holds an event called ‘Bloomin’ Alderney’. For one week the local residents open their gardens to the public.

What is the best time of year to see the puffin and gannet colonies?

The puffins are best seen between the end of March and early July. Boat trips out to the uninhabited island of Burhou to view the puffins are regularly organised with the Wildlife Trust during this time. The gannets are best between late January and October. The gannet colony – Les Etacs – can be viewed from on land, but for an up close view of these beautiful birds a ‘round the island’ boat trip is best.

Are there boat links to the other Channel Islands or France?

Boats from Guernsey

The Little Ferry Company runs a boat service on their 12 seater twin hulled cruiser between the islands. The journey takes approximately 1 hour. To book or for more information please visit their website: www.thelittleferrycompany.com.

What is the tax status of the island?

Alderney enjoys some tax advantages such as 20% income tax and generous personal allowances. There is no VAT, no tax on capital, no tax on inheritance, no tax on trusts whose beneficiaries live outside the island, no tax on exempt companies carrying on businesses outside the island, and there is largely 0% corporation tax (with a few exceptions).

Can non-Alderney residents buy a house on the island?

Unlike Guernsey and Jersey, which both have highly restrictive property markets in which outsiders are only allowed to buy limited properties sold at inflated prices, Alderney has no restrictions at all. Foreigners can buy a house at the same price as the locals at any time.
